New J-1 Student Intern Category: Facilitating International Work Exchanges for Undergraduate International Students
Date and Time: February 19, 2010; 9:00 am
Description:
n April 2009 the US Department of State instituted a new J-1 Exchange Visitor Program category, the J-1 Student Intern. This category opens the door to a new type of exchange in higher education. Under this new program category, it is now possible for WSU's Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) to issue documents for departments who would like to host undergraduate international students interested in doing an internship at WSU. The students must be in the midst of an academic program outside the US in order to qualify but it is not required that the student go through any kind of admissions process at WSU. After receiving the J-1 Student Intern materials the student may enter the US solely to participate in a work/research experience at WSU. The processes and rules related to this category, while similar in some ways to the J-1 Research Scholar category, are different in many respects. This session will cover the unique opportunities and challenges of this new category and discuss the processes that have been put in place by OISS to assist and guide the hosting departments.

In addition, many students who are immigrants to the US also find it challenging to decipher the implicit norms of academic/professional writing. This workshop provides an opportunity to learn about strategies and discipline-specific resources for supporting your ESL graduate students in writing for academic and professional purposes.
