Faculty-Led programs are developed and led by WSU faculty for WSU students with approximately a variety of program options available. Currently, programs for 2010 are under development and will be posted to this web page. Fall 2009
- International Business and Hospitality in Switzerland
- October 5, 2009 - December 18, 2009
The Switzerland program is for certified majors and minors in the WSU College of Business. Students who are certified in other majors at WSU and interested in receiving an IBUS minor are encouraged to apply. The program is located at the University Center Cesar Ritz (UCCR) in Brig, which lies in the heart of the Swiss Alps. The immediate surroundings of the town offer unequaled beauty and opportunities to relax, whether hiking in the spring or skiing in the winter. UCCR is operated by the Cesar Ritz Colleges and is housed in a college building with facilities of a modern campus. Faculty members from WSU and UCCR will provide course instruction in English (up to 15 credit hours). WSU students and students from UCCR will take classes together.

China is an ideal location for learning about international business. As the world’s third largest economy, it is one of the world’s largest exporters and importers of goods. China is also one of the world’s oldest civilizations with a history of nearly 5,000 years. Its rich cultural heritage makes China an excellent location for studying Asian culture.

Summer 2010
- Architecture in Japan
- May 13 - June12, 2010
Spend four weeks in Japan exploring traditional and contemporary design in 7 cities and earn 6 credits. Each city has been selected based on its distinctive architecture, history, culture, art, landscape and lifestyle. Students will stay in different types of accommodations, both traditional and contemporary, to gain a better understanding of Japanese lifestyles, which will help students to understand function and symbols of architectural space in Japan. There will be organized guest lectures and tours. Transportation will be primarily train and foot. Assignments will focus on having each student map his/her experience visually in order to help students to understand the experience of Japanese architecture from different perspectives.

Apply - Business in Greece

Take advantage of the opportunity to earn six to nine credit hours while visiting the land where civilization began, the unique and culturally rich country of Greece. Students will enjoy the sun and the sea while experiencing an ancient yet modern civilization. As students interact with the local population, they will learn how many Greek words are the ancient roots of the English language. Students will have the opportunity to visit Skiathos, one of the most popular islands in the Aegean sea; Athens, the city with the most glorious history in the world; and Delphi, the place where heaven and earth met and the most important archeological site in Greece. Students will also be able to visit some of the most famous monasteries in Meteora. Be ready for an educational experience of a lifetime!

Apply - Business in Northern Thailand

Study in Chiang Mai, a place known for its amazing food, magnificent landscape, and friendly people. Chiang Mai is 350 miles north of Bangkok, nestled between the mountains of the tropical north. During the six-week summer program, students will be immersed in the local community, culture and people. Business courses are offered at the prestigious Chiang Mai University alongside Thai and other international students. Company visits, cultural excursions, and a tour of the capital, Bangkok, are included.

Apply - Chile: The Land of Poetry and Wine

Enjoy four weeks in beautiful Valparaíso, Chile, while you learn on the campus of Universidad Católica de Valparaíso. The program will include a language course and a content course, both taught entirely in Spanish by WSU and UCV Instructors. Students will improve their oral skills as well as their written Spanish and reading abilities. The program will include extra-academic activities, such as city tours and handcraft workshops. There will be two trips to Santiago and "the route of wine" (Casablanca Valley), and one to Isla Negra, where one of Pablo Neruda's houses is located. Students will learn about Chilean society, the way Chilean people live, their culture, holidays, music, typical dishes, and family life.

Apply - European Fashion Industry Study Tour

Spend 13 days visiting European origins of the apparel and textiles industry. Destinations include London, Paris, Florence and Lake Como, Italy. This combination of global travel and cultural exploration will include world famous designer studios, production outlets, high-end retail stores and museums. Scheduled visits for this year include Designer Zandra Rhodes, trend forecasters WGSN, visual merchandisers at the Adel Rootstein Company, and a fashion illustration workshop in London, an antique silk factory in Italy, Roberto Cavalli, and Historic costume in Florence. Organic fashion and a cooking afternoon will also be featured in Florence, Galleries Lafayette in Paris and Musee D'Orsay, the Montero Textile Factory in Lake Como, and more! Put on your most fashionable walking shoes for this high-powered tour and get a behind-the-scenes look of the influential fashion industry of Europe!

Apply - Food and Wine of Italy

Now in its sixth year, the Food and Wine of Italy program enables students to gain this expertise at the Apicius International School of Hospitality in Florence, Italy. Students experience hands-on training in a Tuscan kitchen, study and taste the wines of Italy, and will train in front and back of house operations at Ganzo, a student-operated restaurant in the city center. Excursions to view the production of regional specialties such as parmesan cheese and balsamic vinegar augment the curriculum, along with visits to the best food markets and culinary establishments in Florence (gelato and chocolate shops, quirky Panini restaurants, to-die-for bakeries, and intimate wine bars). Time also is built into the schedule for walking tours and museum visits to allow students to soak up the extraordinary art, history, and culture that lend to Florence its special ambiance. This year WSU’s executive chef Jamie Callison will coordinate logistics on-site and the Graduation Feast showcasing student accomplishments.

Apply - Health Care in Peru

This course provides an experience in global community health care in the Amazon region of Peru. Students will apply assessment skills in planning and implementing health care to individuals and communities. The program will provide an excellent opportunity to analyze the cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors that can influence health care. Field trips will include an excursion on the Amazon River and a visit to the Sacred Valley of the Machu Picchu ruins nestled on the eastern slopes of the Vilcanota mountain range.

Apply - Hospitality Experience in Phuket, Thailand
- May 10 - June 18, 2010
The program begins in Bangkok, and moves to Phuket, Thailand, one of the primary tourism areas of the country. During the first part of the program students study at Prince Songkla University. Students study destination business management with a WSU professor, and visit numerous local tour operations such as diving, snorkeling, kayaking, culture, heritage, animal and nature adventure sites. Course work will include consumer and management evaluations and development of a business plan for a competitive tourism and hospitality company. Students will stay at a resort in Phuket and complete hospitality internships by shadowing managers to practice what they have learned about Thai culture and customs related to the hospitality and tourism industry.

Apply - Scandinavia: Art and Cultures

Since the days of the Vikings Scandinavia has developed into modern Western European nations of high living standards, universal healthcare, and social security benefits while sporting a vibrant social and arts scene. Noted for Scandinavian design and alternative energies, Denmark, Sweden and Finland are an integral part of the European Union. Along with first-hand experiences of contemporary life in the three Scandinavian nations, we will search for remnants of ancient Norse cultures in museums and sights in order to make connections between the present and the past. Course requirements include preparatory meetings during spring 2010, a travel journal, and a research paper examining the confluence of Scandinavian art and cultures.
