Spend three weeks in beautiful southern Brazil. The Regional University of Blumenau will host students for the first two weeks offering intensive Portuguese language study coupled with discussions on social, political, and economic issues in Brazil. The group will travel west to visit one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the world: the Iguaçu Falls on the Argentina border. Next students will travel north to Curitiba, considered one of the most environmentallyconscious cities in the world. Curitiba also has been hailed for outstanding urban planning. From Curitiba the group will travel north to spend time in rural communities where students will learn about the use of banana leaves and manioc in the local economy, traditional fishing techniques, and other sustainability practices. While in Brazil the group will share the locals’ passion for music and dance, their outstanding work on phytotherapy, as well as stories around a bonfire on one of the world’s most beautiful beaches.

Apply - Crossing Cultures in Andalucia, Spain
- June 22 - July 6, 2009
Students will discover the crossing of art and cultures in the Andalucian cities of Cordoba, Sevilla, and Granada. Here, Arab, Jewish, and Christian cultures have coexisted since the Moorish invasion of the early 8th century. Many centuries of cultures testing each other have left a rich legacy of art, architecture, historical sights, language, and most of all, a contemporary, vibrant Andalucian culture in which all these influences find their expression. We will explore how this culture mix affects modern Spain. Cultural excursions will include famous museums, an amazing flamenco show, the bull fight museum, the breathtakingly beautiful Alhambra in Granada, and the extraordinary Alcazar Palace in Sevilla. Open to all WSU students. No Spanish language requirements. Spring 2009 preparatory meetings required.
