Brian Keith re-enacting history in Wales“Everyone has their study abroad experience: their life-clarifying adventure that, to them, represents a turning point in their understanding of the world.” For Brian Keith, a year-long bilateral exchange at the University of Wales, Swansea was that very turning point.

Studying abroad will help you understand who you are as an individual, as an American, and as a part of the world

Brian shares his take on how his experience in Wales prepared him for the workforce. “I am more comfortable with risk than many people. I understand that there are multiple cultures, even within family groups, and that they must be recognized and respected. I love getting to know people, and I am better at building relationships than I was before I went abroad. Sharing my experiences abroad with others can strengthen relationships. I can speak more articulately when needed, and more simply when needed. I am more aware of communications styles.” Although his term abroad may not have directly led him to his current job, Brian’s learning experience indirectly equipped him with the necessary skills to succeed in his career.

Brian Keith has since integrated his overseas experience into his career development. As a recent graduate from Washington State University, Brian is currently employed as a Client Services Manager at Portent Interactive, one of the top internet marketing agencies in Seattle (http://www.portentinteractive.com/). Brian’s year-long bilateral exchange at the University of Wales, Swansea “helped [him] find a higher-risk, higher-reward position straight out of college.”

“Studying abroad gave me perspective and humility, and demonstrated to me what it means to be American,” a life-long lesson, says Brian Keith. “Studying abroad will help you understand who you are as an individual, as an American, and as a part of the world. And it will change how you understand the world for the rest of your life.
