Brazil: Ecology, Language and Culture
June 8 - 28, 2008
Spend three weeks in beautiful southern Brazil. The Regional University of Blumenau will host students for the fi rst two weeks and offer intensive Portuguese language study coupled with a discussion of socio-political characteristics of Brazil. The group will travel west to visit one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the world: the Iguaçu Falls on the Argentina border. Next students will travel north to Curitiba, considered one of the most environmentally-conscious cities in the world. Curitiba has also been hailed for outstanding urban planning. From Curitiba the group will travel north to spend time in rural communities where students will learn about the use of banana leaves and manioc in the local economy, traditional fi shing techniques, and take lessons on sustainability. While in Brazil the group will share the locals’ passion for music and dance, their outstanding work on Phytotherapy, as well as stories around a bonfi re at the beach.

Business in China: The World’s Fastest Growing Economy
May 4 - June 15, 2008
This unique program will give WSU business students the opportunity to enroll in up to three core business classes alongside Chinese students from Nantong University. Field trips to marketing and manufacturing facilities will enable students to expand their understanding of business practices in China, the world’s fastest growing economy. Two week-long tours also are incorporated into the program. First students will explore the Yangste River Delta area including Shanghai, the ultramodern financial and commercial center of China and Shuzhou, famous for its Ming and Qing Dynasty gardens. During the final week students will visit Northern China including Xian (home to the terra cotta warriors) and Beijing to see the imposing TiananmenSquare, the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, and Imperial Summer Palace. Then, it is off to see the Great Wall snaking its way across precipitous rocky ridges.

Business in Greece
June 16 - July 26, 2008

Take advantage of the opportunity to earn six credit hours while visiting the land where civilization began, the unique and culturally rich country of Greece. Students will enjoy the sun and the sea, including the exceptional landscapes of Ioannina while experiencing an ancient yet modern civilization. As students interact with the local population, they will learn how many Greek words are the ancient roots of the English language. Students will have the opportunity to visit beautiful Corfu (Kerkyra), the most popular island in western Greece; Athens, the city with the most glorious history in the world; and Delphi, the place where heaven and earth met and the most important archeological site in Greece.

Business in Korea
May 12 - June 15, 2008

Spend five weeks in South Korea gaining first hand knowledge of how the concept of customer service in South Korea differs from the U.S. Through company visits students will see how international organizations such as Hyundai and Lotte modify and adapt their management practices to operate effectively in different cultures. Students also will experience the fascinating history, pristine natural beauty and charming folk culture of Korea through visits to the Youngin Folk Village, Kyungju (former capital of the Shilla Dynasty), Jagalch Fish Market and the demilitarized zone. This is a great opportunity to earn WSU credits and experience the rich culture and business dynamics of Korea.

Caribbean Ethnography and Community Development
May 12 - June 15, 2008

This summer field school is a unique service-learning and international studies opportunity that combines ethnography and applied anthropology in a rural Caribbean village. Students learn the process and methods of ethnography while working with local residents on small-scale community development projects. Students will learn the process of ethnographic fieldwork and develop an understanding of public anthropology, the mechanics of applied community development projects in a rural community in a developing nation, an appreciation of collaborative research, and an introduction to the culture of an impoverished Caribbean community. This program is designed for advanced undergraduates and graduate students in Anthroplogy and related disciplines. The first week of the program will take place in Pullman.

European Fashion Industry Study Tour
May 7 - 19, 2008

Spend 13 days visiting European origins of the apparel and textiles industry. Destinations include London, Paris, and Florence. This combination of global travel and cultural exploration will include world famous designer studios, production outlets, high-end retail stores and museums. In the past we have visited Harrods, Zandra Rhodes, Ferragamo, Casa Dei Tessuti, Galleria Dell’Accademia, Galerie Lafayette and Musee D’Orsay, among others. Excursions may include London’s high fashion district, a walking tour of Florence, a traditional Italian meal in Lake Como, one of Italy’s most scenic locales, and a visit to the Eiffel Tower. Put on your most fashionable walking shoes for this high-powered tour and get a behind-the-scenes look of the influential fashion industry of Europe!

Food and Wine of Italy
May 16 – June 6, 2008

Spend nine weeks in Florence, Italy, studying at Apicius, The Culinary Institute of Florence, an internationally respected leader in academic and professional food and wine programs. During the first four weeks, students will study traditional Italian cuisine emphasizing the importance of regional products and the seasonality of ingredients. During this session students also will take an Italian language course to prepare them for their internship placements. After a one week vacation, students will intern for four weeks at quality establishments in Florence. They also will take a wine appreciation course taught by a professional sommelier. The program includes excursions to the vineyards in the Tuscan Region, Capri and Pompei in the south and three beautiful Renaissance cities in the north.

Health Care in Peru
May 14 - June 3, 2008

This course provides an experience in global community health care in the Amazon region of Peru. Students will apply assessment skills in planning and implementing health care to individuals and communities. The program will provide an excellent opportunity to analyze the cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors that can influence health care. Field trips will include an excursion on the Amazon River and a visit to the Sacred Valley of the Machu Picchu ruins nestled on the eastern slopes of the Vilcanota mountain range.

Hospitality Experience in Phuket, Thailand
May 5 - June 14, 2008

The primary purpose of this program is to introduce students to destination management, Thai cooking and serving, and provide the opportunity for international internships. The program will begin in Bangkok, and then move to Phuket, Thailand, one of the primary tourism areas of the country. During the first part of the program students will attend Prince Songkla University. Students will also study destination business management with a WSU professor, and visit a number of local tour operations such as diving, snorkeling, kayaking, culture and heritage, and animal and nature adventures. Course work will include consumer and management evaluations, and development of a business plan for a competitive tourism and hospitality company. Students will stay at a resort in Phuket and work in hospitality internships by “shadowing managers” to practice what they have learned about Thai culture and customs related to the hospitality and tourism industry.

In the Footsteps of Vikings
July 1 - July 15, 2008

Explore the Vikings of Denmark and England and earn WSU credit! In The Viking Age the peoples of Scandinavia put their cultural imprint on large parts of Europe, and in particular England. Here Danish Vikings established Danelaw in the eastern part of England centered in the city of York. They also founded Dublin! They were conquerors and partners in a vibrant world of cultural exchange and trade. During the program we will visit museums and sights to trace the Viking era in modern Denmark and England. During preparatory meetings we will study ancient Viking culture and make connections between the past and the present. Course requirements include preparatory meetings, book reports, completion of a travel journal, and a research paper investigating a specific topic on a cultural or artistic aspect of Viking culture.

Language and Culture in La Serena, Chile
June 9-June 27, 2008

Spend three weeks this summer in Chile, the longest country in the world and home to exceptionally friendly people. Students will engage in three weeks of intensive Spanish language study at Universidad de La Serena. Spanish language will be taught by native Chilean faculty members, and students will also study Chilean social, historic and political issues in Spanish with Professor Cassleman. The University of La Serena?s main campus is perched on the cliffs overlooking the magnifi cent Pacific Ocean. La Serena has a very temperate, semiarid climate with beautiful and extensive beaches of white sand and a marvelous Colonial Spanish area downtown, called Old Town. The program includes lodging at an extended stay hotel and excursions to Elqui Valley, Andacollo and Valle del Encanto, as well as museums and cultural sites to round out the experience. Open to Honors and non-Honors students..

Paris – A Designer’s View
July 29- August 7, 2008

You will engage these sites through methods familiar and unfamiliar to see things anew through the eyes of another culture. Study Abroad in Nigeria: Schooling in a Global Society
May 13 - June 17, 2008

Study abroad in the exciting African country of Nigeria. You will be immersed in a transformative educational and cultural experience. The focus is to extend your understanding of education in a global and multicultural world. You will have extensive visits and experiences with schools, teachers and students in the city of Ibadan. While being the guests of Ibadan Univesity you will have the opportunity to interact with their students through coursework and cultural events. The program includes visits to important cultural sites such as the former slave port of Badagry, the world renowned game preserve of Okomu, and Ife, the cradle of Yoruba civilization.

Total Land Care in Malawi
June 12 - July 29, 2008

WSU, International Christian University (Japan) and Bunda College (Malawi) are working in partnership with the non-profit organization Total Land Care to create a collaborative development effort in Malawi. Four students from each institution will work together under the direction of WSU’s International Research and Development and a Malawi registered Non- Governmental Organization - Total Land Care to evaluate efforts in small-scale farm development of irrigation, crop diversification, tree planting, beekeeping and mushroom production. Students will work in multi-cultural teams to assess programs and conduct field surveys of local Malawian participants. There will be extensive field time at several locations throughout the country.

Fall 2008

International Business and Hospitality in Switzerland
October 6 - December 19, 2008
The Switzerland program is for certified majors and minors in the WSU College of Business. Students who are certified in other majors at WSU and interested in receiving an IBUS minor are encouraged to apply. The program is located at the University Center Cesar Ritz (UCCR) in Brig, which lies in the heart of the Swiss Alps. The immediate surroundings of the town offer unequaled beauty and opportunities to relax, whether hiking in the spring or skiing in the winter. UCCR is operated by the Cesar Ritz Colleges and is housed in a college building with facilities of a modern campus. Faculty members from WSU and UCCR will provide course instruction in English (up to 15 credit hours). WSU students and students from UCCR will take classes together.
