Main Program/Academic Preparation
The IALC’s Main Program is its core program. It focuses on preparing students with the language and academic skills needed to study successfully at universities and colleges within the U.S.
The Main Program offers five 8-week sessions per year and six levels of language instruction, from beginning to high advanced. Students who successfully complete level 5 (the advanced level) meet the language proficiency requirement to enter WSU as an undergraduate. Students who successfully complete level 6 (high advanced) meet the language proficiency requirement for entry to WSU’s Graduate School. Completion of levels 5 and 6 may be used instead of TOEFL for admissions purposes.
The IALC’s Main Program consists of 21-24 hours of instruction per week. Academic courses include Reading/Composition, Listening/Speaking, Grammar, Academic Listening (which focuses on lecture comprehension) and Academic Writing (which focuses on research writing). Students may also choose elective courses in such areas as pronunciation, English through film, conversation, and TOEFL preparation
