International Peer Mentor
Student Leadership Team
The International Peer Mentor Program is an integral part of New International Student Orientation each semester and offers both international and domestic students the opportunity to gain leadership and cross-cultural communication skills. Peer Mentors guide new students through orientation and continue to interact with their mentees throughout the semester as they build connections to the campus and the community.
Program Goals and Objectives
- To assist Mentees in their personal, academic, social and cultural adjustment to studying and living in the U.S. and at WSU
- To provide Mentees with information about services available to them throughout campus and the community, and encourage their use of those services
- To encourage participation in non-classroom educational opportunities (i.e. student organizations, athletics and intramurals, volunteerism, community and campus events)
- To assist Mentees in developing their relationship with the institution, peers, faculty/staff, and community
- To promote a nurturing atmosphere and provide sufficient cultural information to enable students to make reasoned and well-informed choices
- To assist Mentees in developing familiarity with their physical surroundings
- To engage Mentors, as part of the International Center Student Leadership Team, in ideas, concepts and current issues of intercultural communication and globalization
