Worldmindedness
“A crucial part of global education is…a commitment to the principle of ‘one world,’ in which the interests of individual nations must be viewed in light of the overall needs of the planet” -Pike and Selby
At Home in the International Center
New efforts in the International Center are underway to focus on more sustainable practices, which include reducing the amount of waste we create, reusing materials and resources that we already have and continuing to recycle as much as possible. We feel that our center, as part of a larger community, should be held to high standards of globally-minded practices.
The International Center will no longer use disposable cups, plates or utensils for daily use or programming within the center. Alternatives to these disposable items will increasingly be sought out for IC and ISC programming outside of the center. All of our program planning will include strategies to reduce, reuse and recycle.
Furthermore, we are committed to contributing to sustainable development in the broader global community. Only fair trade coffee will be served in the International Center.

Giving Back to the Community
Keeping in line with the International Center’s, International Programs’ and Washington State University’s mission, goals and objectives, we, as a team of leaders, understand the importance of giving back to the community and demonstrating our commitment as global citizens. We value the motto: “Think and Act both Globally and Locally.”
The International Center Leadership Team, consisting of the Peer Mentors, IC Interns/Volunteers and International Students’ Council Executives participate in one organized activity coordinated in collaboration with the Center for Civic Engagement at the beginning of each semester.
In the ‘Beyond Orientation’ phase of the International Peer Mentor Program, all International Peer Mentors collaborate with the Center for Civic Engagement on arranging involvement and volunteer opportunities for the new international and exchange students at WSU.
Global Education
Throughout the course of the semester, IC Interns and Peer Mentors explore, discuss, and synthesize ideas, thoughts and concepts of globalization under the pretext of Robert Hanvey’s five major components of a global education.
The International Center provides the platform for students to engage with the world. As one international student pointed out when speaking about the IC, “The conversation starts here.” (-Masahiro Iemoto). This is just the beginning…
