Malawi Primary School Infrastructure Development

Project Description

Jordan mapThe project aims at creating a conducive, equal opportunity education service in collaboration with partners and communities, to increase pupil attendance thereby reducing/eliminating child labour among the communities in the target areas.

Key Objectives
Through partnerships with the Ministry of Education, the District Executive Committees, and Total LandCare the project will achieve the following objectives:

  1. Improve the infrastructure of existing or new schools through construction of school blocks in selected districts of Malawi where PMI is currently supporting reforestation and livelihood programs.
  2. Improve sanitation for pupils by constructing eco-friendly latrines.
  3. Improve access to potable water through drilling of boreholes in close proximity to school premises.

Improve the school environment by engaging pupils, teachers and parents in tree and fruit tree planting and management.

The approach and strategy will be tailored to suit the prevailing socio-economic, cultural and organizational setup of each district site.  At the district level, the project will be operationalized through the structure of the District Executive Committee.  At the site level, the school management committee and parent/teacher association will oversee construction.  Total LandCare will work in close collaboration with partners to ensure sustainability, sharing of resources, avoiding duplication, and managing conflicts.

The project will contract skilled contractors to supervise construction of school blocks and drilling of boreholes.  Once construction is completed, the infrastructure will be handed over to the District Executive Committee.
