Sustainable Agriculture Projects in Kazakhstan

Project Description

Map of Kazakhstan

This project is a collaboration with Japan Tobacco International (JTI) and JTI/Gallaher Kazakhstan to implement agricultural development program in Southern Kazakhstan.  The program will assist smallholder farmers and their communities to develop more sustainable agricultural systems.  Special challenges face smallholder farmers in Southern Kazakhstan.  These include:

  • Low productivity in grain and livestock sectors
  • Limited access to agricultural inputs
  • Market imperfections inefficiencies

These challenges can be addressed through selective interventions.  WSU and collaborating organizations will work to identify, address and remove high priority constraints.

The general goal of the program will be to develop sustainable agricultural practices to enhance food production and livelihoods for low-income, smallholder farmers.  This is achieved through the following interventions:

  • Enhance productivity through balanced production systems
  • Efficient use of water resources whether ground, stream or precipitation
  • Conservation of energy and soil resources through crop rotation and tillage management
  • Management of pests through integrated and safe techniques
  • Conservation of genetic resources
Bringing awareness of the effect humans have on climate change
