Before your Scholar Arrives (Issuance of DS-2019)

Pre-arrival information Information about paying the SEVIS fee, obtaining a visa, medical insurance, etc. are included in the Pre-arrival Handout which accompanies the packet containing the DS-2019. You are responsible for sending this packet to the scholar (courier service such as FedEx is highly recommended). This information is available to view online at Pre-Arrival

Delays in arriving or cancellations. If plans change and the scholar will not be coming or will be arriving later or earlier than originally planned (the designated start date listed on the scholar document provided by OISS, the DS2019), then the department must contact OISS! This is vitally important. Our office will need to change the start date or cancel the program in the government system (SEVIS). On occasionally OISS will also need to provide a new document for department to forward to the J-1 scholar. Scholars must enter the U.S. and be validated by OISSno later than 30 days after the program start date. If they attempt to enter with a dated documment, they may not be admitted to the US when presenting themselves at the port of entry.
