Scholar Departure
Scholars must depart the U.S. within 30 days of the DS-2019 expiration date or program end date, whichever is earlier, unless they have applied for a change of status.
- Notify the International Scholar Advisor if your scholar leaves or withdraws more than seven days before the program end date on their DS-2019 for any reason.
- Follow University and departmental (yours) policies for departing international visiting J-1 scholar employees as you would domestic employees with regard to:
- Separation PAF (if applicable)
- Key retrieval
- Restricting future access to buildings and laboratory facilities
Grace Period. A 30 day period following the DS-2019 program end date is available to allow the J-1 scholar to prepare to depart the country, including travel within the U.S., or apply for a change of non-immigrant visa status (if eligible). It should not be used to extend their specific academic/research activity. Seek a program extension for that purpose. It is not necessary for visiting scholars to sign departure forms at OISS prior to departure.
