J-1 Student Intern Applications

OISS is here to assist with the required non-immigrant visa processes in order to facilitate international exchange for J-1 Student Interns and their hosting departments. We receive the application materials from the hosting department and the intern and issue the necessary documents that will enable the student intern to apply for a visa and enter the US to participate in a student intern program at WSU. We also provide an orientation for incoming student interns after their required immigration check-in at OISS upon arrival at WSU. The department will be responsible for assisting the student as the host. The department must initiate the process by contacting OISS.

In order to issue the necessary documentation, the student intern must provide the following list of materials

  • Copy of passport ID Page
  • Financial Support Documentation with English translation (For non-WSU funded positions)
  • A signed Training/Internship Program Plan T/IPP form
  • A signed Academic Advisor Form (from an academic advisor, professor, or administrator at the students home institution)

Sponsoring Professor Requirements and Process Description

The following steps must undertaken by the hosting professor (in cooperation with the student intern) to bring a student intern to WSU:

  • An interview must be conducted with the student by phone or in person to determine whether or not the student has adequate English skills to function in the proposed internship.
  • Department must submit the online student intern document request (part A and part B) at the OISS web site.
  • OISS will complete a training placement plan (DS7002) and a J-1 certificate of eligibility (DS2019), based on the information provided by the department in the online request form (part A and part B).
  • OISS will send the completed DS7002 form as an attached PDF document to the department for review and signature.
  • Department will send a signed copy of the DS7002 form to OISS as a scanned attachment or hard copy original.
  • OISS will send a scanned copy of the signed DS-7002 to the student intern as an attachment along with a copy of the Home Institution Academic Advisor Form with instructions.
  • After receiving these two documents back from the student with all the required signatures, OISS will issue the DS 2019 and notify the professor or department representative to pick up the documents and forward them to the student by courrier service.
  • Student will apply for a visa entry stamp at a consulate or US embassy, based on instructions provided by OISS (and embasy or consulate web site).
  • After the student secures the visa stamp they will enter the US.
  • Student will check in with OISS within a few days after arriving in Pullman* and purchase health insurance before beginning employment at WSU.
  • OISS will provide an orientation for the student in person or by video conference for branch campus student interns.
  • Sponsoring professor will complete an evaluation for each student intern. All evaluations must be completed prior to the conclusion of the internship program and submitted to OISS and to the student intern. Programs exceeding 6 months in duriation require midpoint and concluding evaluations

* Students working at branch campuses do not need to come to Pullman to check in at OISS but must provide copies of their documents to OISS and attend an orienation (in person or by video teleconference)
