J-1 visiting scholars with NO Income in 2007

If you were present in the U.S. in 2007 but did not receive U.S. income in 2007 you must send a completed Form 8843 to the IRS prior to June 15, 2008 for yourself and all dependent family members (if applicable). Complete a separate 8843 form for each F-2 or J-2 dependent family member that accompanied you in 2007 and send them to the address below in separate envelopes.

Obtain a downloadable form 8843. This form is also available in OISS, 108 Bryan Hall. Samples of the completed 8843 are posted on the OISS bulletin board.

Instructions for completing form 8843

If you are a J-1 scholar who did not receive income, but your spouse is eligible to claim a deduction for you on their 1040NR, 1040NR-EZ, 1040 or other form, you must obtain an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) to obtain the deduction. See FAQs for obtaining an ITIN.
