J-2 dependents with NO income in 2007

If you were present in the U.S. in 2007 (for even one day) you must send a completed form 8843 to the Internal Revenue Service prior to June 15, 2008.

This form should not be enclosed with any tax form your J-1 family member (for whom you are dependent) files. A separate 8843 form must be filed for each J-2 dependent family member that was present in the U.S. in 2007. Each 8843 must be enclosed in a separate envelope and sent to the address in the 8843 instructions below.

Obtain a downloadable form 8843. This form is also available in OISS, 108 Bryan Hall. Samples of the completed 8843 are posted on the OISS bulletin board.

Instructions for completing form 8843

IF YOU WERE J-2 IN 2007 AND YOU WERE EMPLOYED IN THE U.S. PLEASE RETURN TO THE TAX INFORMATION HOME PAGE AND SELECT J-2 DEPENDENT WITH 2007 INCOME

If you are a J-2 dependent who did not receive income, but your J-1 spouse is eligible to claim a deduction for you on their 1040NR, 1040NR-EZ, 1040 or other form, you must obtain an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) to obtain the deduction. See FAQs for obtaining an ITIN.

Disclaimer: This information is obtained from a variety of sources as a starting point for you.  The Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) does not make any claim for accuracy, and will not be liable for any mistakes you may make in your return.
