J-2 dependents with NO income in 2007
If you were present in the U.S. in 2007 (for even one day) you must send a completed form 8843 to the Internal Revenue Service prior to June 15, 2008.
This form should not be enclosed with any tax form your J-1 family member (for whom you are dependent) files. A separate 8843 form must be filed for each J-2 dependent family member that was present in the U.S. in 2007. Each 8843 must be enclosed in a separate envelope and sent to the address in the 8843 instructions below.
Obtain a downloadable form 8843. This form is also available in OISS, 108 Bryan Hall. Samples of the completed 8843 are posted on the OISS bulletin board.
Instructions for completing form 8843
- Enter first name, last name;
- Enter Social Security Number or ITIN (if you have one; otherwise leave blank)
- Enter your address in your home country or country of permanent residence
- Enter your address in Pullman or WSU housing location
- Enter information requested in Part 1,
- 1a: Enter the visa category, and date you entered to begin your current program
- 1b: answer ONLY if you changed your visa category after arriving in the U.S.
- 2: Enter your country of citizenship
- 3a: Enter your country here; if you have more than one passport, enter the one you entered with most recently
- 3b: Enter your passport number here
- 4a: Enter the number of days you were physically present in each year
- 4b: Enter the total number of days you were present in 2007
- Skip parts II, III, IV and V
- Sign and date at the bottom of page 2
- Send the form to the following address:
- Internal Revenue Service Center
- Austin, TX 73301-0215
- Make copies for your records

If you are a J-2 dependent who did not receive income, but your J-1 spouse is eligible to claim a deduction for you on their 1040NR, 1040NR-EZ, 1040 or other form, you must obtain an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) to obtain the deduction. See FAQs for obtaining an ITIN.
